Police detectives in Burlington are on the hunt for two thieves who drove five new Hondas off a dealer lot on the weekend in what appears to be a well-planned job. The vehicles are together worth $150,000.
The break and enter took place on Fairview Street west of Brant Street sometime between 5:45 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Monday, Halton police say. The dealership was closed Sunday.
Police say two men entered the dealership and removed keys for several vehicles, then drove five of them off the lot including four 2010 Honda Accords, two black and two white, and a grey 2010 Honda CRX. Each vehicle is worth roughly $30,000.
They took keys for 19 vehicles in total, said general sales manager Brad Joseph, who also noted it’s the biggest theft the dealership has had.
“They took a bunch of keys and they didn’t take the other cars and I know that they stole a key coding machine from a dealer in Mississauga, so they are now able to make keys for any Honda that they can track a serial number on.”
Joseph says the thieves appear to have checked out the premises on Saturday, according to video surveillance footage.
He says they ripped the secured box containing the keys right off the concrete wall.
The first suspect wore a black balaclava with the eye area exposed while the second suspect appears to have worn a Toronto Blue Jays baseball cap.
A possible suspect vehicle involved in the thefts that was seen on the lot on numerous occasions is an early 2000 Honda Civic with four doors, light in colour with a skirt kit and a rear spoiler.
